The Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) promotes cooperation between the Ruhr University Bochum, the Technical University Dortmund and the University of Duisburg-Essen, which have been working together in the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) since 2007. The center was founded in early March 2010 by Stiftung Mercator and the UA Ruhr. With its programs, MERCUR supports scientists, institutes and faculties of the three universities in networking across universities, especially in research, but also in teaching. Behind this is the belief that by joining forces, the Ruhr region can gain considerable clout in the national and international competition for the best ideas and minds.
The Stiftung Mercator is a private foundation that promotes science, education and international understanding. It initiates, develops and finances projects and partner organizations in the areas to which it is committed: It aims to strengthen Europe, improve integration through equal educational opportunities for all, drive forward the energy transition as a motor for global climate protection and anchor cultural education in schools. It is particularly committed to the Ruhr region, the home of the founder's family and the seat of the foundation.
In the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), the Ruhr-University Bochum, the Technical University Dortmund and the University of Duisburg-Essen have been working together since 2007. Following the motto "better together", the alliance offers researchers a wide range of opportunities for cooperation and networking, while students benefit from our wide range of bachelor's and master's degree programs with numerous specialization options. More than 100 collaborations in research, teaching and administration aim to expand the services of the three partner universities by joining forces. With more than 115,000 students and nearly 1,300 professors, the alliance is one of the largest and most productive science locations in Germany. The UA Ruhr's international cooperation is supported by liaison offices in New York, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro/São Paulo.
