Research group description

Economics

The overarching topic "Global Streams in Urban Spaces – The Economy of Diversity" represents the point of departure for different interdisciplinary research questions of the working group Economy. In dealing with these questions, the researchers are guided by the basic consideration that economic development and cultural diversity in the two focus regions, the Ruhr area and Istanbul, may not be dealt with separately. How was and is "diversity" communicated and used for economic and urban development? To answer this basic question, the researchers work in five sub-groups on the following specific topics: Ruhr yesterday (How is migration remembered?), Ruhr today (How are ethnic economies supported?), Istanbul yesterday (How do minority and majority interact?), Istanbul today (How does city restructuring produce urban images?), Streams (Which economic streams connect these cities?). To handle these research questions, the members of the working group will conduct a scientific excursion to Istanbul in summer 2010 to meet experts from academia and other relevant fields (e.g. urban planning). The results of this interdisciplinary project will be published in an anthology. In addition, the working group will organise a workshop in the winter semester 2010/11 where renowned scientists and intellectuals will present their points of view on the group's topics.
