Culture and Society
The members of the working group Culture and Society conduct research in the subgroups 'Religion and Values', 'Transfer of Knowledge and Culture' and 'Integration and Language' on diverse interdisciplinary questions.
The subgroup 'Religion and Values' focuses for instance on the consequences of cultural globalisation on religion, values and identity. One question in this context is how attitudes towards religion (of oneself and others) change due to these new conditions. Does the diversity of religions in our multicultural society enhance its coherence or is diversity rather an obstacle in this context? The member of this sub-group will present their findings during the art project "Sondernutzung" in summer 2010 which will be documented in a movie.
In the second subgroup 'Transfer of Knowledge and Culture', the main focus is the transfer of knowledge in a historical perspective. The central project of this group is the organisation of a conference from 2nd to 3rd of December 2010 with international experts, such as the Canadian Professor Ronald Grimes, who is a well-known specialist on culture and religion. The publication of the conference results is planned.
The subgroup 'Integration and Language' focuses with its research especially on the role of language for a successful integration of migrants and how language skills can be stimulated effectively. Further topics are the political-juridical foundations of integration as well as the general conditions of accepting integration efforts. What can be learned in this context from the international comparison of different national integration and migration policies? Which factors influence the formation of a "national identity" and in how far is this reflected in the construction of integration and migration policies? These and other questions will be discussed during a conference from the 30th of September to the 1st of October 2010.
