Project description
At the beginning of the 21st century, we are facing a multitude of complex global challenges. In order to develop sustainable and innovative ways in dealing with those challenges, new ideas are needed - not only but especially from the sciences.
From November 2009 to November 2010, about 100 postdoctoral researchers of the Metropolis Ruhr work in interdisciplinary research groups and in cooperation with international scientists on challenges of today's globalized world in the following fields:
1. Climate
2. Technology
3. Economics
4. Health
5. Culture and Society
The Global Young Faculty's goal is three-fold: It aims to strengthen and establish an interdisciplinary network of outstanding and committed young scientists in the Metropolis Ruhr, to present their innovative scientific ideas to tackle pressing global-societal problems and thirdly, to promote and offer cooperations with international experts and networks. Hence, the Global Young Faculty encourages international integration and the social responsibility many young scientists are eager to carry,
The Global Young Faculty is an initiative of Stiftung Mercator, coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen. It is a contribution of these two institutions, the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr and the extra-university research institutes to the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. The Global Young Faculty is additionally supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of of North Rhine-Westphalia. |

| Die Arbeitsgruppe Klima beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit den Auswirkungen veränderter klimatischer Bedingungen auf die Artenvielfalt (Biodiversität) sowie mit technischen Potentialen zur Minderung und Anpassung an den Klimawandel. |

| Der Umgang mit den Risiken neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien sowie die Frage nach der Nachhaltigkeit deutscher Forschungsförderung bilden die Schwerpunkte der Arbeitsgruppe Technologie. |

| Der übergeordnete Themenkomplex "Global Streams in Urban Spaces – The Economy of Diversity" stellt für die Arbeitsgruppe Wirtschaft den Ausgangspunkt zahlreicher interdisziplinärer Fragestellungen dar. |

| Die Arbeitsgruppe Gesundheit beschäftigt sich mit der fundamentalen Frage nach einer gerechten und effektiven globalen Gesundheitsversorgung (Equitable Global Health). |
